This has to be some of the most surprising and exciting news that I’ve heard all year. Apple has released a public beta of their new application for Intel Macs, Boot Camp. Boot Camp is a boot manager that lets you install a copy of Windows XP onto an Intel Mac. The application helps you partition your drive for both OSX and Windows, and then lets you install Windows from a disc. Then when you boot the machine, you hold down the option key, where you can then select the operating system you would like to boot into. There is no emulation involved, Windows runs perfectly natively on the hardware.
Apple is also including windows drivers for all of its hardware along with the release of Boot Camp. This solves many of the graphics and networking problems that the hacked boot managers were running into.
It was exciting enough when individuals were able to hack together a dual boot setup, but now that Apple has released an official manager things are extremely exciting, since running Windows and OSX together is now supported. The next step I would like to see Apple take is to offer Linux support in Boot Camp.
