I haven’t been as excited about something as I am about this in a long time (as my post frequency shows :-/). Gmail is adding the ability to chat on the Gtalk network WITHIN the Gmail web interface. This means you don’t need Gtalk or a Jabber client installed, it all takes place in the DHTML interface of Gmail. E-mail and Chat are seamlessly integrated together. Added together with the frequently added ability to view Gtalk chat logs from within Gmail, this is becoming one killer web application. Can it take on AIM? Tonight I watched friends struggle to get AIM working on school-owned computers due to software issues… a Gmail/Gtalk solution would have been running instantly (though I still love Meebo when I need web-based IM).
