I know I’m waaaay behind on posts… I have a lot to post about too. I have a few days here before I start work so maybe I’ll be able to sit down and crank some out!
Anyway, the reason for this post. Today someone recommended a great free IMAP web service to me. The service is www.fastmail.fm, and it’s a wonderful alternative to services like Hotmail or Yahoo Mail. It’s no Gmail, but I’m not even going to get into Gmail, just because I’m too ignorant at this point.
Part of the reason I was looking for a good free e-mail service is because I have been wanting to move from using Outlook to using Thunderbird. I wasn’t able to (easily) integrate my Hotmail accounts into Thunderbird, but Fastmail.fm is IMAP and integrates flawlessly. Fastmail’s free service allows for 10 megs of storage and 40 megs of bandwidth per month. For a one time $15 fee you increase your storage to 16megs and your bandwidth goes up to 80megs per month. The greatest benefit, however, is probably the fact that you get a SMTP so you can send e-mail from any connection. I am strongly considering upgrading my account to get the SMTP because I am using so many different networks with my WiFi on my Clie, it would be nice to be able to send e-mail without constantly changing my SMTP server settings.
When you sign up you get your choice form dozens of domains. I chose an address with the mailas.com domain. I just think it looks cool. Yes, I’m a bit shallow, but I’m happy!
