Wow it’s been a long time! Thankfully I don’t think I actually have any regular visitors to this blog. In any event, here is a quick update.
As you may or may not know, the Sony NX70V, NX60, and NZ90 handhelds have a Compact Flash slot on the back of them. Sony has not included drivers for this slot to use memory cards. Instead, Sony only supports the use of thier WiFi card, the WL100, in this slot. Many of us who got one of these units had hopes of sticking a 1gig CF card in and carrying around hundreds of mp3s or hours of mpeg4 video. This did not happen though, and it was proven that the only card that would work in this slot was Sony’s very own WiFi card.
Today, Eruware has relased a driver that adds CF Memory functionality to the NX/NZ handhelds. This driver makes the CF slot seen by the PalmOS as a second VFS volume. This means that all programs that are written to support more than one memory card will work with the CF slot on the Clie! The driver also has a utility that lets you have the CF Slot replace the Memory Stick slot in the OS. This lets you use the CF slot with Sony’s built in apps such as Audio Player (the MP3 player) and Movie Player (mpeg4 player). Sony wrote these apps to only look for the MS, and do not support a second VFS volume. With this driver, however, the apps are fooled into thinking the CF slot is the MS slot, and all works great!
I served as a beta tester for this driver, so I have seen it grow from a read-only driver to the full fledged (and very transparent) driver we have today. If you have a NX/NZ device you MUST purchase this driver right away. It is amazing to have both a CF Memory card and Memory Stick in your device at the same time, launching programs and viewing documents from each at the same time. You can purchase the driver from http://www.eruwarestore.com/ . The cost of the driver is $27, a very very very very small price to ask for the type of function this driver brings to the unit. I’m waiting for a little cash to accumulate so I can pick up a 1gig CF card and carry around a couple full length movies around with me.
I’m going to try and focus on updating this again.. I have just been under a lot of pressure lately. Personal stuff that has no place being discussed here. Enjoy!
